President’s Page

Greetings,

My name is Carol Ruane. I am proud and humbled to have been recently elected to serve as the 2016 – 2017 Chapter President of the Long Island Blue Star Moms NY6, such an AMAZING organization.

I have been a member of the LIBSM NY6 since 2012 when my Son,  now Sgt. Christopher John Ruane, graduated Parris Island earning the Eagle, Globe and Anchor pin as a United States Marine  and drafting me (not by choice) into the military family life as a Blue Star Mother. This is a lifestyle only other military families can understand.  In truth, I did not want him to become a Marine, but it was his proud choice and a choice I told him I would support with all my heart and soul. I have, and will continue, to do just this.

Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. (BSMA) is a private nonprofit organization in the United States that provides support for mothers and families who have sons or daughters in active service in the United States Armed Forces. It was originally formed during World War II. The name came from the custom of families of servicemen hanging a banner called a Service Flag in a window of their homes. The Service Flag had a star for each family member in active duty regardless of branch or rank. Living servicemen were represented by a Blue Star and those who had lost their lives were represented by a Gold Star.
This simple banner showed that this home, this Mother, this Family was proud of their child. From this simple act of hope and pride, the Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. was formed. Mothers came together to create a volunteer organization that provides support to military service members and their families. The group’s purpose is to sustain those who have already served and are currently serving, the United States of America.

Our Chapter encompasses all of Suffolk County and the 5 Boroughs & is 165 member strong. My hope is, it will continue to grow. Our goals and mission continue to be the focus of our Chapter as well as the National Organizations. Our mission is:
To serve all “Our Children” serving in the Military, our Veterans and the Families of Our Fallen Heroes.

Through the unconditional support of each other, the sisterhood built within, our commitment, community involvement, volunteerism and patriotism to our country, we create and keep this vital organization focused and thriving. We will continue to raise monies to send care packages to those serving, we will continue to help support our Veterans, with honor, we will continue to stand flag lines, salute, thank and honor our fallen heroes, we will continue to educate ourselves and others to help better our service commitment. As Blue Star Mothers that, as always, is our mission and focus.

I’d like to thank our Fallen Heroes and their families for their ultimate sacrifice, Our Veterans and Our active Military for their service to this great country.

Respectfully,

Chapter President
